Stingrays Swim Team (5 - 18 years)

The Michiana Family YMCA Stingrays is a YMCA competitive swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for ages 5 to 18 years old. The goal of our team is to provide every member an opportunity to improve swimming skills and achieve success at his or her level of ability, from novice to experienced swimmer. Dekalb Invite: Our first meet of the new year is an invitational at Dekalb on January 14thDeadline to sign up is Friday, December 30th.

Warm-ups are at TBD. Meet will start at 9:00. Swimmers can choose their events - they may swim 4 individual and 2 relays. Entry fee amounts will be posted to everyone's account by January 3rd and must be paid prior to the meet.

Holiday Practice Schedule: All practices will be held at the YMCA. Monday, Wednesday and Friday practices are in the AM. Tuesday and Thursday are normal practice times. The schedule has been emailed out, if you haven't received it, please email the swim team.

In the last meet of 2011, 59 Michiana Stingrays competed at home against the Sturgis Stingrays.

Whitley Dual Meet Recap:

Mahlon Costello (9) slashed his 50 free time by 9.65 seconds and his 100 IM time by an amazing 17.34 seconds! Way to go Mahlon!  Izabella Frank (8) minimized her 25 fly time by 5.29 seconds.  Aubrie Milliman (17) took 2.68 seconds from her 100 fly.  Diego Quijada (8) sliced 9.49 seconds from his 100 free and a brilliant 12.32 seconds from his 100 IM.  Celia Stump (9) dropped 2.47 seconds from her 100 IM.  Hannah Szymanski (8) took time off in three of her events: 4.84 seconds from her 100 free, 2.63 seconds from her 50 free, and a whopping 18.27 seconds from her 100 IM. Good job Hannah-banana!

Sturgis Meet Recap:

30 Stingrays made the journey to Sturgis MI on November 5. 

Ben Behrens (9) took 2.97 seconds off of his 100 IM.  Ana Chambers (10) reduced her 100 IM time by 4.38 seconds.  Mahlon Costello (9) dropped 7.2 seconds from his 50 fly, and 9.88 seconds from his 50 breast.  Izabella Frank (8) reduced her 100 free time by 8.51 seconds.  Aubreanna Grady (11) took time off three events: 5.09 seconds off her 50 free, 6.66 seconds off her 50 fly, and 4.57 seconds off her 50 breast.  Wyatt Highland (11) dropped 3.39 seconds off his 50 backstroke in the 200 medley relay, and 5.27 seconds off his 100 IM.  Hannah Lozano (11) sliced 5.43 seconds from her 50 back and 7.21 seconds from her 100 free.  Andrew Oberlie (11) shaved 5.51 seconds from his 50 breast.  Joseph Radde (9) minimized his 50 back time by 3.54 seconds.  Kaity Radde (12) reduced her 50 breast time by 4.85 seconds and her 100 free by 5.43 seconds.  Celia Stump (9) dropped time in all three events: 2.80 seconds from her 50 free, 5.74 seconds from her 50 back, and 6.65 seconds from her 100 free.  Demetrius Williams (7) reduced his 25 fly time by 4.41 seconds, and his 25 back time by 4.51 seconds.

Niles Dual Meet Recap:

58 Stingrays competed in our first home meet of the season on Saturday October 29th.  Four of which made their Stingray debut in our win over Niles, they were Dominick Haskins, Abby Taylor, Hannah Taylor, and Noah Yant

Congratulations to Jordyn Bloode who made her Zone cut in 50 backstroke!

Some of the individual swims we want to highlight with personal best times of two or more seconds are:

Kate Behrens took 4.36 seconds off her 25 free.  Nate Behrens improved his 200 free by an amazing 11.15 seconds, and his 50 breast by 2.19 seconds.  Chase Brackeen cut his 100 IM time by an impressive 8.08 seconds and his 50 free time by 2.13 seconds.  Mikey Everhart reduced his times in three events, 44.44 seconds from 200 free, 37.92 seconds from 100 fly, and 3.97 seconds from 100 back, fantastic!  Ebba Fox diminished her 25 back time by 3.46 seconds and cut an awesome 8.46 seconds from her 25 breast.  Izabelle Frank took down her 100 IM time by a superb 19.67 seconds.  John Harmon shaved 2.25 seconds from his 200 IM time.  Caleb Jaarda minimized his 50 free time by an excellent 11.34 seconds.  Gabby Jeffers lessened her 200 IM time by 2.48 seconds.  Hannah Lozano cut her 50 free time by 2.35 seconds.  Aubrie Milliman lowered her 100 back time by 2.04 seconds.  Andrew Oberlie took 2.50 seconds off his 100 free.  Chris Oberlie decreased his 25 back time by 2.95 seconds.  Diego Quijada slashed 5.59 seconds from his 25 free, and 3.52 seconds from his 25 breast.  Joseph Radde improved his 50 breast time by 3.70 seconds.  Kaity Radde brought down her 50 back time by 4.24 seconds.  Emily Shemesh sliced 2.85 seconds from her 50 free time, and 8.98 seconds from her 100 free.  Isaac Shrader reduced his 25 free time by 4.39 seconds and removed an inspired 12.48 seconds from his 25 back.  Grant VanParys knocked a magnificent 6.09 seconds from his 200 free.  Aaron Warnock shrank his 25 free time by a brilliant 6.18 seconds and 10.40 seconds from his 25 back.  Mackenzie Warnock dropped 3.60 seconds from her 50 breast.  Demetrius Williams removed a splendid 7.47 seconds from his 25 free and a fantastic 4.01 seconds from his 50 free. 

Cole Spooktacular Invite 2011:

Twenty-One Stingrays made the trip to the Cole County YMCA on Saturday. We had outstanding swims for only our 3rd meet of the season and finished with a 3rd place overall.

Izabelle Frank (8&U) improved her 25 Free by 2.62 seconds as well as her 25 Back by 3.09 seconds. Erin Joines (11-12) knocked 2.25 seconds off her 100 IM. Andrew Oberlie (11-12) improved his 100 IM by 5.98 seconds. Chris Oberlie (8&U) improved his 25 Free by 4.43 seconds and his 25 Back by 3.58 seconds. Deanna Stangas (15&O) dropped 4.28 seconds in her 50 Back. Grant VanParys (15&O) dropped 2.10 seconds in his 50 Fly.

La Porte Dual Meet Recap:

Thirty Stingrays made the trip to LaPorte for our first swim meet of the season.  Overall we had some great swims and good races—especially from our new Stingrays.  Six swimmers made their Stingray debut. These swimmers were:  Kate Behrens, Jordyn Bloode, Chase Brackeen, Joseph Radde, Kaity Radde, and Isaac Shrader.

Some returning members of the Stingray team who deserve recognition are those who had personal best performances by at least 2 seconds: Ben Behrens (9-10) dropped 3.56 seconds off his 100 Free. Mahlon Costello (9-10) improved his 50 Free by 8.41 seconds, his 100 IM by 17.38 seconds and his 50 Breast by 8.49. Willow Fox (8&U) dropped 2.77 seconds off her 100 Free. Izabelle Frank (8&U) improved her 25 Free by 3.25 seconds. Diego Quijada (8&U) knocked 9.29 seconds off his 25 Fly and 3.26 off his 25 Back. David Swearingen (15&O) dropped 2.31 seconds on his 100 Free.

Elkhart Dual Meet Recap:

The Stingrays had forty-two swimmers compete in the Elkhart dual meet. We had some awesome swims and a great show of team spirit. Two swimmers made their Stingray debut at this meet: Caleb Jaarda and Chris Oberlie.

 The followings swimmers dropped time by at least 2 seconds: Ben Behrens (9-10) dropped 6.96 seconds in his 100 IM. Ana Chambers (9-10) improved her 50 Free by 3.53 seconds and her 100 Free by 12.82 seconds. Mahlon Costello (9-10) knocked an AMAZING 38.23 seconds off his 100 Free and 7.60 seconds off his 50 back. Ebba Fox (8&U) bested her 25 Free time by 2.45 seconds and her 50 Free by 7 seconds. Isabel Fox (9-10) dropped 4.67 seconds in her 200 Free and 2.61 seconds in her 50 Breast. Izabelle Frank (8&U) improved her 25 Fly by 6.37 seconds, her 50 Free by 18.31 seconds and her 25 Breast by 18.95 seconds! Savannah Grady (8&U) dropped 5.98 seconds in her 50 Free. Anika Guenther (8&U) shaved off 6.92 seconds in her 25 Free and 3.03 seconds in her 50 Free. Gabrielle Guenther (8&U) dropped 15.17 seconds in her 100 Free and 3.20 seconds in her 50 Free. John Harmon (13-14) improved his 200 Free by 4.19 seconds and his 100 Back by 33.32 seconds. Wyatt Highland (11-12) knocked 2.60 seconds off his 50 Free. Ellie Linarello (8&U) took 7.60 seconds off her 25 Breast time.  Bella Linarello (8&U) dropped 10.88 seconds in her 25 Free and 10.70 seconds in her 25 Back. Andrew Oberlie (11-12) knocked 11.50 seconds off his 200 Free. Diego Quijada (8&U) improved his 100 IM by 15.72 seconds, his 50 Free by 3.86 seconds and his 25 Breast by 5.51 seconds. Matthew Rach (11-12) lowered his 200 Free time by 3.91 seconds. Joseph Radde (9-10) improved his 50 Free by 6.23 seconds. Aaron Warnock (8&U) dropped 2.62 seconds in his 25 Free and 6.94 seconds in his 25 Back. Kids develop friendship and self confidence through competitive swimming, gain valuable experience through teamwork and develop individual excellence as a member of the Y swim team. Kids may join the Stingrays any time of the year. Our fall/winter season runs September through March. Your child may join the team when able to swim a minimum of 2 lengths (50 yards) of both front crawl and backstroke, and have been introduced to breast stroke. Kids’ swimming skill level will determine placement in practice lanes and at swim meets. Swim team members must be a Full Member of the Y.
