Focusing on Healthy Living

No Challenge is too Tough

This past October 9th thousands of health seekers competed in the 26.2 mile Chicago Marathon. Runners from all 50 states and over 100 countries showed up for the big event. So how cool is this? Our very own Y member, Jim Rodino from Elkhart, ran in this year's Chicago Marathon. While training for the marathon, Jim dropped from 260 pounds to 205. Wow! Now that's an example of healthy living. However, what's even more amazing is his story about the obstacles he had to overcome so he could participate. Read more...

What makes Jim's story even more impressive are the obstacles he had to overcome with having calf injuries. When training for a marathon, normally one would find a "running schedule" that includes increased mileage and long runs to help prepare, but Jim needed to do something different.

Jim said, "I had been attending spinning classes at my local Y. In six months my legs were back in top cycling form (I raced when I was younger for 3 years). With little or no strain on my calf muscles, this led me to conclude that this could be the training replacement for the mileage that I was not able to do."

Great job Jim!! Not bad for a guy who ran his first marathon at age 61. Like so many others, he wasn't going to let his injuries keep him from reaching his goals. Jim got creative with his training and exercise and joined the ranks of those who can say they have braved the Chicago Marathon!

If Jim can do it you can too! He's an inspiration to us all that we can meet our goals of living a healthy lifestyle despite obstacles that stand in our way. We're just glad the Y could help! Tons of people like Jim are taking advantage of the YMCA of Elkhart County's diverse group exercise offerings to help them meet personal goals of living healthier. From Spinning to Yoga, try one out and don't be left out.
